Swimming Regionals Information
Fraser Valley Regionals - August 1-3 2008

Congratulations to our Provincial Swim Qualifiers!

The Haney Neptunes Aquatic Club competed with 5 other teams from the Fraser Valley Region at Centennial Pool in Abbotsford last weekend to secure their places in the upcoming Provincial Championships to be held in Trail, BC. Swimmers must first qualify in preliminary heats in their event and then they must place 1st, 2nd or 3rd in the final heat in order to qualify to attend the Provincial finals. In addition to individual competition in as many as 4 events, swimmers participate in 200 metre freestyle and medley relays. Only the top 2 relay teams in each event qualify for the Provincial competition.

Of the 54 Neptunes entered to compete in the finals, more than 30 qualified to take on the rest of the province in Trail. Overall, 28 individual competitors qualified and 11 of the 19 relay teams entered will move on to the final round of competition.

Top honours in their divisions went to Andres Fierro and Julian Kotylak with 4 gold medals each and Nathan Stein with 3 gold and 1 silver. Qualifying in all 4 of their events were: Jesse Wicklund with 2 gold and 2 silver, Talana Madu with 2 gold, 1 silver and 1 bronze, Matthew Torres with 1 gold and 3 silver, Nicholas Todd with 1 gold, 2 silver and 1 bronze, Cole Wagner with 1 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze, Thomas Yeo with 1 gold and 3 bronze and Matthew Halajian and Jared Kopp with 3 silver and 1 bronze apiece.

Our triple medalists were Michael Abebe: 1 gold and 2 silver, Emma Germain: 2 silver and 1 bronze, Megan Neale: 2 silver and 1 bronze, Danika Kotylak: 1 silver and 2 bronze and Kaitlin Hollyday with 3 bronze medals. Rounding out the Neptunes’ Provincial qualifiers in individual competition this year are Elena Fierro (bronze), Connor Heidema (silver, bronze), Amanda Hollyday (2 silver), Noah Johnson (silver), Nathan Kotylak (bronze), Cole Lauridsen (bronze), Ginelle Nazareth (bronze), Luke Parenteau (bronze), Joshua Sanborn (silver, bronze), Victoria Smith (gold, silver) and Arianne Yeo with 1 bronze and a record-breaking gold medal win in the Division 3 Girls 50 metre breaststroke, smashing a record twice in the same day that had stood for 24 years!

According to Guinness:

The world record for the women's short-course 100-m butterfly swim is 56.61 seconds by The Netherland's Inge de Bruijn, set at the Olympic Games in Sydney, Australia, on September 17, 2000.

On July 26, 2003, Ian Crocker (USA) won the record for swimming butterfly 100m in Barcelona, Spain with a time of 50.98 sec.

Slowest Olympic Heat Winner
He had only learnt to swim nine months earlier, had never raced over 100 meters, and had never even set eyes on a full-size swimming pool! But Eric Moussambani took to Olympic swimming like a fish to, um, dry land! Having trained in the rivers of Equatorial Guinea, the sight of Sydney's International Aquatic Center must have been a daunting sight. Maybe Eric's big race nerves were calmed by the absence of any competitors, his two fellow qualifiers having been dismissed for false starts. Either way, he emerged a hero one minute 52.72 seconds later (around half as fast as the top swimmers), as the slowest Olympic heat winner ever! But what Eric lacks in skill, he more than makes up for in determination;. Speaking after the event, he declared, "I want to get a good coach and compete in the Athens Olympics… and hopefully get a medal!"
