FUN FACTS The oldest intact mammoth ever discovered is 'Jarkov', estimated to be 23,000 years old. Excavated by a group of French scientists in October 1999 in Siberia (Russia), it would have stood 2.6 m (8 ½ ft) and was 47 years old when it died. The lifespan of a mammoth is about 60 years. Mammoths were HUGE herbivorous mammals that lived about two million years ago. They are closely related to modern-day Indian elephants. Excavated by a group of French scientists, Jarkov is estimated to be 23,000 years old, and his tusks weigh 64.8 kg (143 lb) each. He has been transported to a cave, where he is being thawed out with hairdriers. |
