Ogopogos top team at own swim meet
A record-setting weekend saw the host team take top spot overall in the 63rd annual Ogopogo Invitational swim meet held at the H2O Adventure and Fitness Centre.
Twenty-three of the Ogopogos swam personal best times in every event they entered on the way to the boys, girls and team titles. In all, 21 teams and 354 athletes from throughout the province took part in the two-day event.
Cam Feil highlighted the Ogopogos‘ performance by setting four meet records and three club marks, while claiming the aggregate silver in Division 4.
The 13-year-old swam to gold in the 200 individual medley in a meet record time of 2:38.15, easily eclipsing the previous standard of 2:41.17. And although placing second in the 50-metre freestyle (27.19), 100 breaststroke (1:17.01) and the 100 free (59.91), his times were all better than the previous meet records.
Feil smashed his own club record in the 100 breast, while his 50 freestyle time bettered that of former club record holder Graham White (2005). The previous 100 free record was held by Denzel Mohammed (2009).
Ogopogo teammate Shawn Guison, 12, set new club standards in three events on the weekend and broke a pair of meet records.
His first-place time of 31.11 in the 50 free was not only a meet record, but it also broke the Ogopogo Div. 3 record set by Scott McLean 14 years ago. Guison, the aggregate silver-medal winner in his division, also bettered the 100 IM meet record of 1:19.94 with a swim of 1:18.42.
Other club records falling to Guison were the 100 freestyle, previously held by Joe Wallick (2007) and his own mark in the 50 breast, set last year.
Seventeen-year-old Lucas Stringer swam to aggregate gold in Division 7, while setting a meet record in the 50 free with a time of 25.63 in his preliminary race.
Sydney Rankmore, 14, also claimed aggregate gold, taking top spot overall in Division 5 and setting both a meet and club record. Her first-place time of 2:40.47 in the 200 IM final bettered the previous meet mark of 2:41.79, while her clocking in the 100 breast broke the club record set by Emilia Obedkoff last year.
Obedkoff set a meet and club record in the open division with her time of 1:22.99 in the 100 breaststroke. The previous Ogopogo standard had been held by Dilraj Bal since 2001. Obedkoff also established a meet record in the 50 freestyle with a time of 30.64. The previous best was 31.26.
Teammate Shane Hayes, 15, broke a 19-year-old Ogopogo record set by Bryan Lockhart when he recorded a time of 1:15.97 in the 100 breaststroke. He also smashed the meet record of 1:16.67.
Other silver aggregate winners representing the Ogopogos were Kennedy Dickie (Div. 1), Logan Lalonde (Div. 2) and Scott Fellhauer (Div. 6), while aggregate bronze went to Kyra McNulty (Div. 2), Mary Koehle (Div. 5) and Juliet Kaczmarek (Div. 7).

A quick update on the upcoming Lumby Meet. It seems, they too, have some construction on the most direct route to the pool. Here are some alternate directions to the pool in Lumby.
We are looking forward to our upcoming annual Fathers Day Swim Meet on June
19 & 20.
Also, there is some construction happening on Norris Avenue (street that
T-Bones our pool building from the south), therefore, please use Glencaird
Avenue from the west, when accessing the pool. We are asking that all
campers use the Lions Campground, phone 250 547-9221.
There is a concession being offered on site each day by Hubert’s Good Food.
We will be having a 50-50 draw each day and turtle races.
This is NOT the same weekend as Lumby Days, this year, so there will be lots
of room in the park for team tents.
