Well, we have now had 2 more meets under our belt. I hope that you have all had a chance to attend and participate in one of the meets this year.
Thanks go out to the Courtenay and Nanaimo clubs for all the hard work that they put into their meets. For those of you who did not attend either meet, they were both, in my opinion, very successful. Courtenay was well attended with approximately 320 swimmers and despite some slightly soggy conditions on Saturday, all seemed to enjoy themselves. The Nanaimo meet was attended by about 420 swimmers from the Island, as well as 3 clubs from the Vancouver area. This is our only heats and finals meet of the season before getting to the 2 regional meets, and are important for the swimmers, coaches and officials in learning and reinforcing the procedures necessary in running a meet of this format. It is my hope that next year we pursue having at least 1 more meet of this format on the Island. Having said that, it is up to the Regional Executive and club representatives to determine what our meet schedule looks like next year. So please start to think about it so that you are prepared to have a good discussion at our first Regional meeting in the Fall.
By now, hopefully, your club has put up the posters that were distributed to them pertaining to this year's Provincial Championships in Abbotsford. They are designed to get the interest flowing. The theme this year is "Into the Next 50". We are entering our second 50 years as an organization.
Carrying on with Provincials, our region's responsibility this year is the crash desk area. I sent out an email to the club presidents asking them to provide the names of people who would be attending this year's meet. Now, obviously it is too early for all to know whether they will qualify or not, but for those who do know, please volunteer to help out. If necessary, we may run a training course before the meet begins. More information on these duties will follow in the near future. Remember, we rely on volunteers to make our organization run efficiently, so chip in and do your part.
Well, that is all for now. I hope to see you on deck and around the pool at our next meet in Campbell River. Have your air bands ready!
Bob
