CLUB
HISTORY The Flying Aquanaut Swim Team (FAST) Esquimalt Summer Swim Club has come a long way since its beginning in 1984. With the enthusiasm of the swimmers, coaches, and parents, FAST has rapidly become an integral part of summer swimming on Vancouver Island. Our swimmers have developed into a strong group, recognized at meets not only for their skills in the water, but also for their sportsmanship, warmth, and sense of camaraderie. This was acknowledged in 1989 by the awarding of the Tom Lauriente Trophy to FAST. This highly coveted award is given to the Club that best demonstrates the spirit of summer swimming.
Jim Murray and Bruce Clark began the club in 1984 with a small group of
children interested in summer competitive swimming. The club took off in 1986
when a parent body was formed to handle the day-to-day functions of the
organization. A logo was designed to give us recognition as a significant force
in summer swimming.
Over the years a number of excellent coaches have contributed to a
history of competitive swimming that see many FAST swimmers qualify for the
Provincial Championships year after year. Our club and our coaching philosophy continues to strive for... "promoting, encouraging, and developing the individual's capacity to achieve excellence and life skills through participation in competitive aquatic activities" (Mission Statement, BCSSA.)
